What can I give my dog for an upset stomach?

By Jerry Welsh

Considering the huge appetites as well as the indiscriminate eating habits of dogs, dog owners should not be surprised if the pet suffer from an upset stomach every now and then. Dogs would eat not only spoiled food and rotting things but non-food items as well. In spite of being well fed, dogs would appear to be always hungry thus anything that catch their fancy would be ingested.

A dog's upset stomach can be due to a number of reasons. Dogs with sensitive stomach are susceptible to gastro intestinal health concerns but stomach upsets are commonly associated with the dog's indiscriminate eating habits. In some dogs, stomach upset can simply be the result of a change in diet or it can also be a symptom of an existing but undiagnosed medical concern the results to a weak immune system.

As stomach upset is a common concern, taking the dog to a vet may not be necessary. The dog's stomach upset can be resolved with home remedies and in a day or two the pet will be its usual self. Having been accustomed to dealing with the upset stomach of the pet, the owner would know how to treat the diarrhea and the vomiting of the pet.

Dogs are naturally energetic but one with an upset stomach will be lethargic because of the pain in the stomach area. Dogs, as mentioned have huge appetites thus they would not pass up the chance to gobble food. However, the pain in the belly would cause a dog to turn away from food . As mentioned, stomach upset is not a serious concern but if the pet's vomit and diarrhea are bloody, the dog must be taken to a veterinary facility immediately. These are symptoms of a more serious illness and not just an ordinary stomach upset.

To soothe the upset stomach of the pet you can ease up on the food intake of the pet. Mature dogs can be fasted for 24 hours. Younger ones must be given easy to digest food in smaller amounts. These measures will give the stomach a chance to rest. Dehydration is a serious concern that can results from diarrhea and vomiting thus the pet must be encouraged to drink. Drinking may exacerbate the abdominal pain thus the dog would refuse to drink. The dog must be encouraged to drink to prevent dehydration. Instead of water, fill the water bowl with ice cubes. Easy to digest food can be given to the pet after the fasting period.
